Series Preview - Victoria Generals

06/01/2013 1:23 PM -

The Acadiana Cane Cutters welcome in the undefeated Victoria Generals to Fabacher Field for a two-game weekend series Saturday and Sunday.

Series 2

Victoria Generals (2-0) at Acadiana Cane Cutters (0-2) - Fabacher Field
Thursday, May 30 - 7:00 PM
Friday, May 31 - 7:00 PM

After dropping a two-game series to the Brazos Valley Bombers (2-0), the Acadiana Cane Cutters (0-2) will look to even their record at 2 wins and 2 losses with a two-game set against the Victoria Generals, who are coming off of a two game sweep of the Woodlands Strykers. The Cane Cutters will welcome the Generals to Fabacher Field for 7:00 PM first pitches on both Saturday and Sunday to conclude their four-game opening home stand, before traveling to East Texas on Tuesday. A strong showing on Saturday will certainly improve the Cane Cutters’ chances of doing so. The Cane Cutters struggled mightily in the first few innings of their opener against Brazos Valley, but were able to respond with a strong rally Thursday before losing 17-12. On Friday, Cane Cutters pitchers performed much more efficiently, but the bats were quieted by a strong outing turned in by Bombers’ lefty starting pitcher Michael Walker.

This weekend, the Cane Cutters will feature a lineup similar to both Thursday and Friday’s contests. Right fielder Blake Brom expects to continue his torrid pace at the plate after hitting a home run on Thursday night and picking up a hit and a walk on Friday. Infielder Brett Thornell also performed well during the Brazos Valley series, picking up 4 hits in 11 at-bats, which is good enough for a .364 batting average. The rest of the lineup will hope to improve on last night’s game and equal their production during Thursday night’s showdown. Cane Cutters’ pitching improved from Thursday to Friday, and will look to continue improving into the upcoming series against undefeated Victoria.

The key to Victoria’s series sweep against the Woodlands Strykers was a great pitching performance during the entire series. Though their starting pitchers struggled in both games, their bullpen arms were able to come in and shut the door on Woodlands bats while not allowing a single earned run. Josh Urban, a junior right-handed pitcher from the University of Texas, started the game on the mound for Victoria Thursday night. Though he gave up three earned runs through five innings, he was able to pick up eight strikeouts. Victoria will also strive to maintain their hot offensive barrage at the plate after scoring fifteen totals runs in their first two games of the 2013 campaign.

Saturday night at Fabacher Field will be Knight Oil Tools’ Scout Night, where all in attendance will receive a Cane Cutters’ Scout Patch through the gate, and all kids will have the chance to enjoy the Fun Jumps, rock wall, and dunk tank, in addition to many other activities we’ll have on-site. Tonight will feature the Cane Cutters’ first “Saturday in the Park” of 2013 in which ALL drink prices will be reduced by $1 between 6 -7 PM before the game. This Sunday’s game will be All-Acadiana Baseball and Softball Team Recognition Night. Each player will be honored on the field during a pregame ceremony. We hope to see you all out at Fabacher Field Saturday and Sunday for an excellent, fun-filled weekend for everyone!
