Acadiana Drops Series Finale Versus Victoria, Lose 5-2

06/02/2013 9:21 PM -

The Cane Cutters had a tough time at the dish on Sunday night, splitting the series with the Generals before heading on the road next week.

The Acadiana Cane Cutters’ faithful welcomed the entire 2013 All-Acadiana Baseball and Softball Team rosters to Fabacher Field on Sunday Night. Before the game, host Kevin Foote, of The Daily Advertiser, introduced each team highlighting their special achievement. After the ceremony, the Cutters dropped a frustrating game to Generals and fell to one win and three losses on the young season.

Acadiana pitcher Dillon Crain got off to a rough start in the first inning of Sunday’s game, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks before an early exit and replacement by pitcher Justin Sinibaldi. Over the next 6 1/3 innings, Sinibaldi was able to hold the Generals’ bats to just 2 runs on 7 hits and a walk, while striking out 5. Although Sinibaldi pitched well during his outing, the Cane Cutters’ bats were unable to get anything started against Generals’ starting pitcher Nathan Humpal. Humpal pitched 4 perfect innings before giving up a walk to Cane Cutters’ shortstop Nick Dawson in fifth inning, in the midst of a 6-inning gem that rendered just 1 run on 1 hit and sitting down 2 Cane Cutters. After Humpal’s perfect game was snapped by Dawson’s walk, his then no-hitter was broken up by Cane Cutters’ catcher Vaughn Shapen an inning later with a single in the 6th. Shapen would later score on a Brett Thornell sacrifice fly to cut the Generals’ lead to 4-1. Shapen’s knock would be the Cutters’ only notch in the hit column this evening. Cane Cutters’ pitchers Jeff Oracion and Jacob Rodrigue pitched the final 2 innings of the Cane Cutters loss, giving up a run in the 8th on a Romeo Cortina RBI single to make the score 5-2.

Generals’ pitcher Nathan Humpal, right fielder Romeo Cortina, and first basemen David Paiz Jr. highlighted the game for Victoria. Cortina went 2-for-4 on the night with 2 singles, each coming with an RBI. Cane Cutters’ pitcher Justin Sinibaldi pitched well during his 6 1/3 long relief outing, giving up 2 earned on 7 hits and one walk, stifling the Generals’ bats for most of his appearance.

The Cane Cutters will hit the road for their first trip outside of Lafayette in 2013. They will lock up with the East Texas Pump Jacks for a two-game set in Kilgore, before heading to Brazos Valley for their second showdown of the season with Brazos Valley.
