There shouldn’t be an empty seat in the house when the Brazos Valley Bombers return to Fabacher Field Tuesday night for their two-game series against the Acadiana Cane Cutters. Brazos Valley and Acadiana currently rank first and second in the Texas Collegiate League and have not had a game that didn’t come down to the wire in the late innings. The series will be the first between Brazos Valley and Acadiana in Fabacher Field since the season opening series on May 30 and 31. Acadiana played two series in Brazos Valley in June, the last starting on June 16. The Cane Cutters will look to continue their second half dominance and beat the Bombers for the first time in 2013.

Acadiana had a big week following the All-Star Break, as the team won 3 of the 4 games they played against the Woodlands Strykers and Texas Marshals, improving their second-half record to a league-leading 7-1. Texas Collegiate League Warstic Player of the Week, Nick Zaunbrecher of ULL, pitched a complete game shutout against the Strykers, earning his first victory of the season while striking out 5 batters. The Cane Cutters got several more stellar outings on the hill, as the three other starters during the week each pitched at least 7 innings in their start. Acadiana got several solid performances at the plate as well, as third baseman Brett Thornell of Stephen F. Austin hit at a hot clip, averaging .571 at the plate with 2 doubles and an RBI. Southern Miss player Connor Barron smashed a couple home runs this week and drove in 6 total runners. Watch for Acadiana to keep the bats hot as the mound presence continues to loom over opposing batters.

Brazos Valley hasn’t quite been able to keep up their torrid first half pace since it ended with the month of June. Since the start of the second half, the Bombers are 5-3, two games behind the Cane Cutters for first place in the second half chase. Where their pitching dominated through most of the last week, their hitters struggled to scratch runs across the plate. As a team, the Bombers hit .217 last week with just 3 extra base hits. First baseman G.R. Hinsley did well for the Bombers, hitting .364 with 4 singles in 11 at bats while managing to walk 5 times. The Bombers did have an excellent week on the mound, as pitcher Texas A&M Zac Curtis pitched a complete game of his own, giving up just one run on two hits and 3 walks. Their next matchup with Acadiana should prove to be a tough one. Expect pitcher's duals and top-notch baseball at Fabacher.
