Friday August 2, 2013 | 7:00 PM
Fabacher Field

Thursday and Friday will feature two of the Texas Collegiate League’s strongest teams in your Acadiana Cane Cutters and the league leading Brazos Valley Bombers, and this may be your last chance to watch these two teams together on the same field! The pre-weekend matchup will be their final series at Fabacher Field on the year with one more series to go in Bryan, Texas to finish the regular season on August 8th and 9th. The two game set will be the final two games of Acadiana’s 6 game homestand as the Cane Cutters dropped their last couple games to the Victoria Generals, 8-5 and 3-2. Acadiana will look to rebound against a strong Brazos Valley squad who took one of 2 against the East Texas Pump Jacks. Brazos Valley currently leads the Texas Collegiate League in the overall standings, and are tied with the Cane Cutters atop the second half standings with a record of 14-8. Acadiana’s magic number for a playoff bid stands at 4 games, meaning that any combination of Acadiana wins and East Texas Pump Jacks’ losses equal to 4 will push the Cane Cutters into the 2013 Texas Collegiate League playoffs.
The Bombers fared somewhat better against the East Texas Pump Jacks, taking one game of two against their opponent in Bryan. The Bombers lost a dreadful Game one 16-7, but turned it around and took Game two with a final of 8-1. The Bombers' G.R. Hinsley and Brett Kauten each had 4 hits in the series, leading the team to 15 runs on 25 hits over the two games. Kauten added 2 RBIs to his season total, while Hinsley scratched 4 across, adding to his already league-leading numbers in that category. Outfielders Ford Moore and Graham McIntyre each had 3 hits for Brazos, helping their offense to secure runs against the Jacks’ pitchers. The Bombers hope to continue their offensive production into this series against the Cane Cutters and into the postseason.

Acadiana lost a couple of heartbreaking games against the Victoria Generals Tuesday and Wednesday night; the first game ending at 8-5 and last night’s contest at 3-2. Acadiana had a rare quiet series at the plate, mustering just 12 hits and 7 runs against the Generals, an issue sure to be fixed by the time the Bombers make into town. Logan Taylor did have a solid series at the plate, knocking 3 base hits in his 8 trips with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Chris Sciambra hit his first triple of the season against the Generals, setting up what would be the Cane Cutters' first run of the game last night. Starting pitcher Justin Sinibaldi pitched well in the first game of the series, tossing 7 full innings, giving just one run on 4 hits while striking out 5 Generals. Cole Prejean of McNeese State was great out of the bullpen in the second game, going 4 innings with just 3 hits allowed and 3 strikeouts. Look for Acadiana to bring with them a strong mental approach in this series against the Bombers, their toughest matchup all year.

Acadiana will celebrate their final Thirsty Thursday on the season tonight at Fabacher Field, during which Bud and Bud Light will be just $1 all evening long. On Friday, Game 2 of the series, we will have our final Fireworks Friday of the season presented by C&G Boats. The  Cane Cutters will also host Acadiana’s emergency responders as a makeup for the July 27th rainout on Superheroes Night presented by Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center! All first responders will be honored before the game in appreciation for their impact on our community here in Acadiana! All emergency responders who contact the Cane Cutters front office will recieve FREE tickets for them and their family!
