Cane Cutters Fall Short in Rally

08/02/2013 9:08 PM -

With the post-season in sight, the Cane Cutters looked to sweep the Brazos Valley Bombers at home to inch that much closer to securing a playoff spot.

The Acadiana Cane Cutters returned to action for the sixth time in seven days at Fabacher Field, this time eyeing a sweep of the nationally ranked Brazos Valley Bombers. The Cane Cutters welcomed all area emergency responders to the park on Acadiana Superheroes Night hosted by Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center.

Acadiana hit the ground running tonight as catcher Mitchell Nau knocked in his 26th RBI with his record-holding 13th double of the year in the first inning, as the Cane Cutters took a 1-0 lead against Bombers’ starter Parker Ray. The Bombers responded in the top of the 2nd inning with 2 runs as catcher Mason Randolph launched his 2nd double of the year. He would later steal home after Mitchell Nau threw a runner out at 2nd making the score after 2-1 Bombers after two frames. The Bombers scratched across another run in the 4th on an Andy Smith RBI single, driving in Mason Randolph from 2nd base, pushing the tally to 3-1 Bombers. Acadiana answered in the 5th inning as Chance Vincent broke the single-season Cane Cutters’ record for hits with his 53rd on the year, driving in Jordie Hein from 2nd base, as the score stood close at 3-2 after five. The pitching settled down after the 5th, as neither team would score again until the 9th inning when Brazos Valley’s Andy Smith would again knock in Mason Randolph on an RBI single. The contest would conclude 4-2 Bombers, resulting in a series split.

Alabama third baseman Chance Vincent led the Cane Cutters at the plate, scoring on two base hits and driving in one run. Mitchell Nau hit another double and also drove in a run for the Cane Cutters. Starting pitcher Nick Zaunbrecher, though solid, was outdueled tonight by Bombers’ pitcher Parker Ray as Zaunbrecher would go 7 innings, giving up 3 runs, 2 earned, on 6 hits and striking out 4. John Gremillion came on in relief during the 8th, going 2 innings and giving up 1 run on one hit while adding a strikeout of his own.

The team will now hit the road for a pair against the Woodlands Strykers in what could be the biggest series of the season. Both teams are in the playoff hunt and vying to lock up a spot in the postseason tournament. Acadiana will return to Fabacher next Tuesday and Wednesday night for the final home stand of the regular season. On Tuesday, the Cane Cutters will be holding a silent auction for three authentic team autographed jerseys during the game. Tuesday will also be the final Duhon’s Fun Jumps Tuesday of the season.
