CANE CUTTERS SIGN THREE FROM SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI

03/06/2014 12:03 AM -

The Acadiana Cane Cutters, who in their three-year history have often had players from the University of Southern Mississippi on their roster, are pleased to announce that this year will be no different with the signings of right handed pitchers Cody Carroll and Cooper Jones along with outfielder/first baseman Ryan Ellis.

“For a program like Southern Mississippi to keep sending us players speaks volumes about our organization and our coaching staff,” Cane Cutters GM Bill Levy said. “It is great to once again have Golden Eagles on our roster.”

Carroll, a 6’5” redshirt sophomore from Mt. Juliet, TN, spent last summer playing for the Center Moriches (NY) Battlecats of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League where he had a 2-3 record, with 34 strikeouts in 28 innings of work. Jones, a freshman from Pensacola, FL, pitched one inning in a 9-5 defeat to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette on February 22 where he allowed no runs and no hits to the then No. 14 ranked Rajin Cajuns.

Rounding out the Southern Mississippi class is Ellis, a redshirt, left-handed sophomore from Columbia, MS. Though he didn’t see any action for the Golden Eagles last year due to a chest injury, he appeared in 21 games, where he started 12, his freshman year.

“These are great signings,” Cane Cutters coach Lonny Landry said. “It is always important to get good pitching and with Ryan, we get someone who has plenty of quality D1 experience.”

The Cane Cutters will open their fourth season on Thursday, May 29th when they host the Brazos Valley Bombers at Fabacher Field in what will be the first part of an “Opening Weekend.” The Cane Cutters are part of the six-team Texas Collegiate League that features some of the Nation’s top college prospects.
