CANE CUTTERS SHOWCASE TALENTS AT LEAGUE ALL STAR GAME

07/08/2014 10:53 PM -

All six Acadiana Cane Cutters who were selected to participate in the Texas Collegiate League All Star Game saw action for the South region this evening. Connor Barron (Southern Mississippi), Taylor Walker (Jackson State Community College), and Hunter Wood (Western Kentucky) were all penciled in the South team’s starting lineup.

Wood, the South’s starting catcher, impacted the game defensively, catching a runner stealing at second base in the 3rd inning. The switch-hitter also registered a single in the top half of the inning and went 1 for 2 on the night at the plate.

Pitcher Ryan May (Louisiana State) proved to be the reliable arm out of the bullpen that got him selected to the South roster by tossing a scoreless bottom half of the 3rd inning that included a strikeout.

A Cane Cutter number would again be called out of the South bullpen in the bottom of the 5th inning. That would be the #16 jersey of Alec Sanchez (Texas State) who quickly retired the North’s batters in order.

In the 6th inning, left-hander Scott Ashford (Ole Miss) became the third Acadiana pitcher to get the call in relief and recorded two-thirds of an inning pitched, allowing one run.

The North region was the game’s victor by the score of 7-3.

Another highlight for the Cane Cutters involved outfielder Connor Barron (Southern Mississippi) receiving the Dinger Bats Texas Collegiate League Player of the Week award. Barron’s spectacular week included four doubles, a triple, six stolen bases, and seven runs while boasting a .385 batting average in the six games. He will look to build on his six game hitting streak after the All Star break. The star outfielder also earned a spot in the league’s Home Run Derby that preceded tonight’s All Star Game and he advanced to the second round.

Barron and his Cane Cutter teammates will resume action at home with an array of events on Thursday, July 10th, against the Brazos Valley Bombers. Come out to the ballpark for Zydeco Night, as Corey Arceneaux and the Zydeco Hot Peppers will be performing when the gates open at 6 PM.
