ACADIANA CLAIMS VICTORY ON WILD FINISH

07/27/2014 8:38 PM -

It was another wild night at Fabacher Field and again the Cane Cutters would win a close game over the Woodlands Strykers, 4-3.

The Cane Cutters struck first in the bottom of the 1st inning. Connor Barron (Southern Mississippi) stroked a single to left field to lead off the inning and scored when Taylor Walker (Jackson State Community College) pulled a two-out double down the third base line.

Walker would add to his RBI tally in the bottom of the 3rd inning. With two outs, Chance Vincent (University of Alabama) would draw a walk and then steal second base. Walker then lined a single to center field just out of the reach of the Woodlands’ Mark Whitehead to score Vincent from second to take the 2-0 lead.

The Strykers would respond late, however, plating two runs in the top of the 8th inning to tie the ballgame.

The Cane Cutters did not panic, though, and would break the ice in the bottom half of the inning. Vincent drew another walk from Stryker reliever Cullen Cosco to lead off. Vincent would then steal his second base of the evening and scored on an Austin Knight (Ole Miss) single in the gap to take the 3-2 lead.

It appeared the contest might be destined for extra innings though as the Strykers would tie the ballgame again in the top of the 9th inning.

But, with one out, Barron drilled a triple to the center field wall. With Cameron Dishon (Ole Miss) batting, Woodlands’ reliever Gandy Stubblefield threw a wild pitch and Barron scored, finishing the Cane Cutter victory.

Acadiana coach Lonny Landry penciled in the right-handed Scott Szush (Southeastern Louisiana) to start on the mound tonight and he delivered five innings of scoreless ball, scattering four hits.

Landry would then make the call to Jake Johnson (Neosha County Community College) out of the bullpen in the 6th inning who pitched a scoreless inning and struck out two batters. Colton Lee (Pearl River Junior College) would be signaled in to pitch one and one-third innings and gave up two Stryker runs. With one out in the 8th inning, Scott Ashford (Ole Miss) came in to pitch, and though he gave up the tying run in the top of the 9th inning, he picked up his second win of the season.

Tonight’s victory allows the Cane Cutters to continue to hold sole possession of second place in the division.
