CANE CUTTERS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER

07/30/2014 10:03 PM -

The Cane Cutters won both games over the Woodlands Strykers tonight by scores of 2-0 and 6-5.

In the first game, the Cane Cutters were led to victory by starting pitcher Marc Frazier (Nicholls State) who tossed a complete game shutout. The Georgia native struck out seven Stryker batters and only surrendered two hits in his second win of the season.

The Cane Cutter offense would provide a run in the top of the 1st inning when Texas Collegiate League all-star Taylor Walker (Jackson State Community College) scored.

Their second run would come in the top of the 4th inning on a James Ziegler (Chandler-Gilbert Community College) base knock.

The second game of the doubleheader would come down to a dramatic finish in extra innings.

Acadiana would strike first again, plating a run in the 1st and 2nd innings by way of an RBI single by Walker and a Trent Giambrone (Jones County Community College) solo home run.

The Strykers would score three runs in starting pitcher Nick Zaunbrecher’s (University of Louisiana – Lafayette) fifth and final inning on the mound to take the lead.

The Cane Cutters would bounce back in the top of the 6th inning to tie the ballgame on Walker’s second RBI of the game – this time scoring Chance Vincent (University of Alabama) on a double.

After a scoreless 7th inning, the teams were set for extra baseball and an exciting finish in the Woodlands.

Acadiana poured in three runs in the top half of the 8th inning to take the 6-3 lead. With one out, Austin Knight (Ole Miss) got the scoring started, driving in Cameron Dishon (Ole Miss) on a single. Daniel Cucjen (University of Alabama) added the second run by scoring Vincent on a single. Knight, on Giambrone’s second RBI of the contest, scored the third run of the inning.

The Strykers would make a strong push in the bottom of the 8th inning, however. After dealing a scoreless 7th inning, Alec Sanchez (Texas State) recorded two more outs in the 8th inning, but got into a bit of a jam, allowing two runs as the Strykers pulled within one. With the Cane Cutters just one out away from victory, they would call on Scott Ashford (Ole Miss) who recorded a strike out to seal the deal. The win was Sanchez’s fourth of the season, and Acadiana extended their winning streak to four games, expanding their second place lead over the Victoria Generals in the league.
