CANE CUTERS PLAYERS RECEIVE TOP AWARDS

08/14/2014 10:41 AM -

A very successful season for the Acadiana Cane Cutters, which saw the team post a solid 31-24 record, with an increase in attendance and corporate sponsors just got even better as the Texas Collegiate League announced its post season awards. Two Acadia players received recognition as outfield Connor Barron was selected as the league’s “Player of the Year” and infielder Chance Vincent was named to the All TCL Team. Barron’s award marks the third time in the teams’ four-year history that a Cane Cutter has achieved this feat. In 2011, former University of Alabama player Taylor Dugas, now in the Yankees system, was selected as the TCL’s Player of the Year. Last year, Mitchell Nau of Texas A&M received that honor.

Barron, who is about to begin his senior year at the University of Southern Mississippi, hit .344 for the Cane Cutters with 20 RBI’s, ten doubles, five triples, and four homers. He also played for the Cane Cutters in 2013, where he hit .253 with 26 RBI’s.

“We expected a big season from him,” Cane Cutters coach Lonny Landry said. “He delivered it. We were not surprised he won this award as he clearly had the best season in the league.”

Vincent, also a returning player, was selected to the All TCL Team as a third baseman. A rising junior at the University of Alabama, he hit .277 for the Cane Cutters this year with 31 RBI’s, four HR and eight doubles. Last year, the Scott native hit .289 with 20 RBI’s for Acadiana.

“We also thought Chance would have a good year, Landry said, referring to the Acadiana High School product. “I think he helps show just how strong baseball is in this area.”

Cane Cutters co-owner Richard Chalmers noted that he was pleased with how the season went; both on the field and around it.

“These awards are a fitting way to close this season out,” Chalmers said. “We are certainly proud of Connor and Chance. It is a good sign that we have some or our premier players wanting to return. It was also nice to see an increase in corporate sponsorships and attendance, as we had some good crowds the second-half of the season. We have a lot of work to do in the off-season, but I like the direction we are headed.”
