Cane Cutters Roll with the Tide

03/11/2015 3:50 AM -

The Acadiana Cane Cutters are happy to welcome back Scott native and former Acadiana High School star, Chance Vincent, from the University of Alabama.  Accompanying him are three Crimson Tide teammates, Taylor Poe, Connor Short, and William Elliott, making their Cane Cutters debut.

Vincent returns home for his third season with the Acadiana Cane Cutters.  He has moved from third base to first base this year and starts for Alabama.  Chance is in his junior year with the Crimson Tide and was named to the Tallahassee Regional All-Tournament Team in the 2014 season.

Vincent was selected to the All TCL Team as a third baseman in 2014. He hit .277 for the Cane Cutters this past season with 31 RBI, four HR and eight doubles. Back in 2013, Vincent hit .289 with 20 RBI’s for Acadiana.

“We are excited to have Chance return for his 3rd year to the Cane Cutters.  He is an exciting player for the hometown fans to watch, and he continually comes through for us in the clutch.  His teammates will be strong additions to the team as well,” said Head Coach Lonny Landry.

Red Shirt Sophomore, Taylor Poe looks to make some noise behind the plate for the Cane Cutters.  The Montgomery, Alabama native has a .308 BA in six games for the Tide this season. Poe played in 10 games his freshman year, and was named to the 2014 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Entering his second year of summer collegiate ball, Poe played in the Florida Collegiate League in 2014. He posted a .273 BA and three RBI with the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs.  “We’ve always had strong offensive players behind the plate, and we expect nothing different from Taylor,” GM Richard Haifley said.

Connor Short, son of former New York Yankees prospect Ben Short, looks to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Auburn University transfer, Connor Short will not suit up for the Tide this season. While he was with Auburn, Short recorded a .211 batting average and drove in eight runs in 36 games last year.

Coming out of Hoover High School, he was rated as the No. 2 shortstop in Alabama by Perfect Game USA. He also played football at Hoover, serving as the Bucs starting quarterback in 2012. Short went 171-of-262 passing for 2,460 yards and 30 touchdowns on the way to a Class 6A State Championship.

Finishing up the list of Crimson Tide players, is sophomore William Elliott.  Elliott has seven appearances at the plate and has a .286 BA to go with it. In his first year with the Tide, Elliott served as a pinch hitter and a DH for 14 games.

Coming out of Oxford High School, Elliott was the 11th ranked prospect in the state of Mississippi. In his senior year, he posted a .400 batting average with nine doubles, two triples, and 30 RBI.

Entering his second year of summer collegiate ball, Elliott played in the Northwoods League in 2014. He put up a .219 BA and 14 RBI with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.

“We’ve always had a good relationship with the University of Alabama, and these four guys will contribute to our team in a big way,” Cane Cutters co-owner Richard Chalmers said.
