Fly like An Eagle

04/26/2015 9:46 PM -
The Acadiana Cane Cutters continue to build up their roster with the addition of three Golden Eagles. Southern Miss will be sending Austin Millet, Kirk McCarty, Taylor Braley and Daniel Keating down to Cajun Country, to make their Cane Cutters debut. This marks the fourth time that the Golden Eagles will be sending players to Acadiana.

Red shirt freshman Austin Millet, will be looking to start his summer collegiate baseball career off right. The Righty from Prairieville, Louisiana, will compete for a starting spot in the rotation and possibly serve as a pinch hitter.

Millet, a four-year letter winner at East Ascension High School, played pitcher, catcher, outfield and infield during his prep career. He was named first-team all-district three times, hit .330 his senior year, and reached the state playoffs in each of his four seasons.

“Millet is a versatile player, he can shut you down on the mound and light you up at the plate,” General Manager Richard Haifley said.

True freshman Kirk McCarty will be joining Millet, by making his summer collegiate baseball debut.

Left Handed Pitcher, McCarty, is finishing up the month of April with three wins and a 1.83 ERA in seven appearances. He has the third best ERA on the team, with 20 strikeouts, in 34.1 innings pitched thus far.

McCarty excels off the field as well, as he was named to the Presidents list in the fall, posting a 4.0 GPA.

“McCarty is a bright kid, and as a pitcher, that’s a huge skill set to have,” Head Coach Lonny Landry said.

True freshman Taylor Braley, from Hattiesburg, MS, will look to add offense to the Cane Cutters in a big way.

The 5/11 252 pounder Braley leads all of Conference USA with a .380 batting average. He currently has 38 hits with 19 RBI and an on base percentage of .439.

A two-sport standout at Oak Grove High School, Braley played third base and pitched for four seasons, while also earning three letters in football. He posted a .364 career batting average with 43 doubles, 15 home runs and 143 RBI during his prep career. His offensive numbers included a career-best .446 mark his senior campaign with 13 doubles, four homers and 37 RBI.

“Braley is a solid contact hitter, and it should be interesting to see how he matches up against pitchers from different conferences,” stated Co-Owner Richard Chalmers.

Finishing off the list will be true freshman Daniel Keating, from Gulf Shores, MS.
Named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, Keating has 16 hits, nine RBI, and five stolen bases thus far.

In his high school career, Keating posted a .329 career batting average with 16 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs and 57 RBI over three seasons. He also earned all-region, all-area and all-district honors.

“We have a lot of young talent on the team, and Keating is no exception,” said GM Richard Haifley.
