The Acadiana Cane Cutters continue to add talent to their already deep roster. Jared Taylor and Daniel Martinez of University of New Orleans look to bolster a talented pitching staff. Joined by the return of pitcher Scott Szush, and Jacob Seward, from Southeastern Louisiana University, the Cane Cutters have high hopes for the upcoming season.

True freshman Jared Taylor is starting his first season in the Texas Collegiate League. Poised to compete for a starting spot in the rotation, the young right handed pitcher from Vidor, Texas is an exciting prospect.

Taylor appeared in 20 games for the Privateers totaling 16 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched.

“Taylor is going to be a great asset to this team’s pitching staff,” said General Manager Richard Haifley, “he has the work ethic and determination we look for in members of our team.”

He will be joined by his fellow teammate Daniel Martinez.

Martinez a sophomore was an important part to the Privateers pitching staff and looks to make an immediate impact in his first season for the Cane Cutters.

Martinez appeared in 22 games with 12 starts. During the season he racked up 64 strikeouts in 72 innings of work while only walking 19 of the batters he faced.

In 2013 he also participated in the Northwoods League, a collegiate summer league, in which he pitched for the St. Cloud Rox. While he only pitched in two games for the team, he gained invaluable experience in his first summer league.

“It’s great to have a guy such as Martinez with his talent and vast experience,” Head Coach Lonny Landry said.

Two other players from Southeastern Louisiana University look to make big strides with the Cane Cutters this summer.

Scott Szush from Thibodaux Louisiana is a returning member to the Cane Cutters.

Last summer he appeared in 13 games with one start for the team. After a great first year with the Cane Cutters, in which he pitched 31.1 innings with 19 strikeouts and totaling a 2.01 ERA, Szush looks to add to his success.

“I saw the handwork pay off for Szush last summer and I am really looking forward to seeing him out there on the mound again for the team,” stated Co-Owner Richard Chalmers.

Another attendee of Southeastern Louisiana University also has high hopes for the upcoming season.

Outfielder Jacob Seward, a sophomore from New Orleans, is experiencing his first collegiate summer league.

Batting an impressive .365 average in 203 at-bats while participating in 54 games his sophomore season. Seward can do more than just hit, as he totaled 19 stolen bases and 25 walks.

“I can’t wait to see what he can do,” GM Richard Haifley said, “he has all the tools and I am sure he will impress many this summer.”

The Cane Cutters are set to open their fifth season at home on May 28th, against the Victoria Generals. Season tickets are now available. Call (337) 451-6582.
