We Are In

Your Cane Cutters scraped out another win tonight and improved their record to 14-10 in a 3-1 low scoring affair, while the Pump Jacks fell to 10-12, as we near the halfway point of the season. This was the first of two matchups with the Pump Jacks.

With the win tonight your Cane Cutters clinched the second seed in the playoffs and will host a home playoff game for the first time in their 5-year existence.

The starting pitching in tonight’s matchup was dazzling as the starters for both teams brought their A-game. Scott Szush (Southeastern Louisiana) pitched a solid 8 and 2/3 innings, giving up only 1 run on 4 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Things did get a little scary in the bottom of the 9th inning as the Pump Jacks managed to put runners at 2nd and 3rd, however Taylor Braley (Southern Mississippi) slid over from third to shut the door on the pending rally.

The Cane Cutters took the lead in the top of the 4th and never looked back. Center Fielder Daniel Keating (Southern Mississippi) had a single and two stolen bases in the inning and eventually scored on Right Fielder James Ziegler’ (Chandler-Gilbert CC) chop back to the mound.

In the top of the 7th short stop Conner Short (University of Alabama) walked and stole 2nd base. He was then moved to 3rd on a sacrifice by First baseman Adam Yacek (University of Miami (Ohio)) just in time for catcher Alex Tucker (Nicholls State) to step in and drive him in with one of his two hits on the night.

The Cane Cutters then picked up and insurance run in the top of the 8th as Daniel Keating (Southern Mississippi) continued his stellar night on the bases, stealing two more bags, after a walk and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Braley (Southern Mississippi).

Your Cane Cutters will be back in action tomorrow night to finish up this two game set with the Pump Jacks. They will be back in home action this Saturday the 4th of July, as they prepare to square off with the Pump Jacks when they make their first trip of the year to Fabacher Filed.
