Season opener rained out. Home opener set for Sunday vs. Woodland Strykers

05/26/2016 2:51 PM -

The Cane Cutters season opener set for tomorrow against the Brazos Valley Bombers has been canceled due to rain and tornado warnings.

The Cane Cutters will now play their home opener on Sunday against the Woodland Strykers in a two-game series, with the second game being on Monday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Fabacher Field. The game will also be streamed live on UStream.tv.

Head coach Austin Flores will debut his first season at the helm of the Cane Cutters on Sunday. Flores, an assistant coach for Nicholls State University baseball, helped lead the Colonels to back-to-back 30-win seasons and became an assistant infielders and catchers coach after the 2015 season. Flores also played baseball at Nicholls State.

With college baseball season still in full force, Flores will have to work with a limited roster. Flores said it shouldn’t be a problem because of the utility of his team, especially the pitchers.

“We have guys that can move around a lot. If we’re thin somewhere or if someone goes down, we have some options. We have some pitchers that are dual guys that can hit and swing a little bit, so that’s one thing we’ve got going for us until we get our full roster.”

Flores said once the full roster joins the team at Fabacher field, speed will be a huge strength.

“I think we’re more of a speed team when we get our full roster. We’ve got some guys coming from the SEC and they’ll provide a little power and a little more juice to the lineup. As far as right now goes, we have speed, and we’re going to utilize that as much as we can to score some runs.

The Cane Cutters team is composed of various collegiate players in the south, with a large SEC class that includes Alabama's Sam Finnerty, Zac Rogers, Chandler Taylor and Cobie Vance, Mississippi’s Brandon Browning and Texas A&M's Trey Jimmerson.

Following the end of the Ragin’ Cajuns season, Dylon Poncho, Jam Williams and Josh Morris, will also join the Cane Cutters.
