Cane Cutters open season with a win against the Woodland Strykers

New Cane Cutters head coach Austin Flores started the season off with a win as he led his team to a victory against the Woodland Strykers on opening night Sunday at Fabacher field.

The Cane Cutters original season opener against the Brazos Valley Bombers on Friday was canceled due to rain. Flores said the two extra days off helped his team to prepare more for opening day, helping his team start the season off with a 5-0 win.

“It’s good for everybody,” Flores said. “It’s good for the organization, it’s good for the coaches to relax a little bit and get one out of the way and it’s good for all of the players too.”

All five runs for the Cane Cutters were scored in the third inning, mostly in part to an error by pitcher J.T. Jakubik overthrowing a ball to first base hit by Trey Jimmerson.

Jimmerson turned the error into three RBI’s, and the Cane Cutters were able to tack on two more runs in the third. The last runs scored all night by either team.

However, the Strykers gave the Cane Cutters a scare at the top of the seventh when pitcher Brian Browning was faced with bases loaded and two outs. Flores said Browning found his rhythm and helped keep the Strykers scoreless.

“Big innings can lose you a game, and we had a comfortable lead (in the seventh),” Flores said. “Browning ran into a little bit of trouble, but he did a nice job of settling in and attacking the hitters and getting out of that inning right there.”

The 5-0 win to start the season is the first of a two game series against the Strykers. The Strykers return to Fabacher field to face the Cane Cutters tomorrow night at 7 with a chance to tie the series.
