This year’s Major League Baseball draft, held from June 9th through June 11th, featured several former Acadiana Cane Cutters players. Each player will now be given the opportunity to sign a contract with the major league team that drafted him. The 2016 draftees join an already strong list of former Cane Cutters standouts.

Jake Winston, a senior right handed pitcher attending the University of Southern Mississippi and a two year participant as a member of the Cane Cutters, was drafted in the 17th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 2013, Winston broke Cane Cutters single-season records with 7 wins and a 2.11 ERA during a TCL All-Star season. Rounding out the 2013 Cane Cutters draftees, Colton Freeman out of the University of Alabama was drafted in the 20th round by the Chicago Cubs as a left-handed pitcher. Freeman played sparingly for the Cane Cutters in 2013 due to injury.

Jesse Stallings, a sophomore right-handed relief pitcher at Louisiana State University, was drafted in the 15th round by the Cincinnati Reds. Stallings pitched for the Cane Cutters in 2014, posting a 4.03 ERA through 44 innings with a 1-3 record.

Last, but not least, Nick Hernandez, a junior right-handed pitcher playing at the University of Houston, was drafted in the 8th round by the Houston Astros. Hernandez did not pitch while with the Cane Cutters due to injury.

Finally, one 2015 Cane Cutter pitcher, Daniel Martinez from the University of New Orleans, has agreed to join the Minnesota Twins Organization in the Gulf Coast League.
