Cane Cutters defeat Marshals 4-1 after three days of rest

The Acadiana Cane Cutters improved to 11-2 on the season after a  4-1 victory over the Texas Marshals on Thursday night at Fabacher Field.

The Marshals struck first when the University of Louisiana-Monroe’s BJ Findley scored a run in the third.

Acadiana’s Sam Finnerty, from the University of Alabama, scored the first run for the Cane Cutters in the fourth. Finnerty’s score was was the result of error by Marshal’s first basemen Jason Pecoraro of Trinity University.

The game slowed down and it looked as if the game may go into extra innings, much like they did last Sunday against the Marshals in Plano, Texas.

But at the bottom of the eighth, the Cane Cutters cut through the silence.

With Kyle Mendenhall, of the University of Oklahoma, on second for Acadiana with no outs, LSU Eunice’s Hunter Feduccia hit the ball deep along the first-base line to bring Mendenhall in for the go-ahead score. Then the offense caught fire.

Trey Jimmerson, of Texas A&M, tallied an RBI on a single to bring Feduccia in and then an error by the Marshal’s catcher on a throw to first base led Jimmerson in for the 3rd and final run of the inning.

The Marshalls were unable to respond in the 9th, ending the game at 4-1.

Cane Cutter’s head coach Austin Flores said he was once again impressed with his team’s pitching.

“We’re always able to grind out games,” Flores said. “Our pitching continues to amaze me.”

Cane Cutter pitcher Makenzy Larsen, of Southern Arkansas University, was awarded the win on the night. Acadiana also totaled 10 hits, with Finnerty, Mendenhall and Jimmerson leading the team with two hits on four at bats.

The Cane Cutters will try to sweep the Marshals tomorrow, as they return to Fabacher Field for game two.
