Cane Cutters Overcome Short Bench In Victory

05/26/2017 9:25 PM -

Despite having many players yet to join the team due to continued participation in their college playoffs, the Cane Cutters won their season opener 10-2 over the Brazos Valley Bombers on Friday night.

Left fielder Gabe Montenegro led the Cutters to victory with his strong offensive performance and earned Player of the Game honors for his efforts. He finished with a stat line of 2-for-3 with a double, run batted in, 2 walks and three runs scored. After the game, Montenegro credited his success to his pre-game preparation, saying “I just tried to stick with my approach and look for a pitch I could drive.”

The Cane Cutters put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored four times to stretch a 2-1 edge to a 6-1 lead. Montenegro opened the scoring in the inning with an RBI double, and Gavin Bourgeois followed up with an RBI single that scored both Brandon Duhon and Montengro following an errant throw which was intended to gun him down at third. The fourth and final Cane Cutter run of the inning scored on a Turner Francis sacrifice fly immediately following Bourgeois’ at-bat.

Come cheer on Gabe and the rest of Cane Cutters as they go for the sweep on Saturday!
