Innings Of Winnings for Fans & Cutters Alike

07/14/2017 10:05 PM -

The Cane Cutters are now enjoying their longest winning streak of the season (8 games) after a sweep of Friday’s doubleheader versus Texarkana. Acadiana took the first 7-inning contest by a score of 2-0 before coming back less than an hour later to claim another 7-inning victory, this time by a score of 7-4.

On a night that saw fans will lots of prizes courtesy of local businesses, Acadiana decided they didn’t want to miss out on the fun. Turner Francis (UL Monroe) put the Cutters on top just three batters into the game, when his RBI single scored Logan Bottrell (New Mexico St). Francis would also provide the only other run of Game 1 with an RBI single that scored Trenton Trosclair (Southeastern Louisiana) in the bottom of the 6th.

Keith Meier (Baton Rouge Community College) finished as Player of the Game after turning in a gem of a performance on the mound. A single in the top of the second was the Twins only baserunner of the game, and the next batter would hit into a double play, resulting Meier facing the minimum of 21 hitters through the seven inning contest.

The second game of the double header provided the Cane Cutters with the chance for an encore, and they obliged. An RBI single by Handsome Monica (ULL) that scored Gabe Montenegro (Southern Miss) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first before the Twins tied it with a run of their own in the top of the second. Acadiana would respond immediately with 3 runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a 2-run double by Kelsey Richard (Northwestern State) that scored Jonathan Artigues (Tulane) and Trenton Trosclair which put the Cutters ahead 4-1. Texarkana would tie the game in the following half inning, but the Cane Cutters would reclaim a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth on the strength of an RBI single by Artigues, an RBI hit-by-pitch that got a piece of Brady Bell (Nichols St) and a Francis sacrifice fly.

Richard took home Player of the Game honors for Game 2, with a 1-for-2 performance that included the 2-run double as well as two walks.

Keith, Kelsey and the rest of the Cane Cutters will look to stretch the winning streak to new heights on Saturday, as they host the Victoria Generals for the first of two games. In honor of Princess & Pirate night, any fan that arrives in costume will receive free admittance.
