Cane Cutters Win Second Straight Extra Inning Game

06/19/2012 1:45 PM -

The Cane Cutters played in another exciting game against the Bombers in Bryan, TX with this one going a little bit farther than the one last night.  The Cane Cutters needed eleven innings to take care of the Bombers.

The Bombers scored first in the bottom of the first inning.  Myles Parma got on base by the way of a single.  Brandon Wood also singled moving Parma up to second.  Brennyn Smith doubled to score Parma.

The Bombers added another run in the second inning.  Quentin Urban led off the inning with a triple.  Jordan Hammerman singled two batters later to get the RBI and score Urban.

While the hits kept coming, no more runs were scored by either team until the top of the seventh.  For the Cane Cutters, Gabe Woods started off the inning with a nine pitch walk.  Woods advanced to second on an error by the catcher before Alex Marse was able to single.  Braxton Lee was able to come through and hit into a fielder’s choice which scored Woods to cut the Bombers’ lead to one run.

The Cane Cutters once again needed some ninth inning magic to extend the game to extra innings.  Ladd Rhodes led off the top of the ninth inning with a walk.  Woods came up and moved Rhodes over to second by the way of a sacrifice hit.  Marse was up next and struck out but was able to get to first on the dropped third strike so now they had a runner on first and third with one out.  Rhodes scored the tying run on a passed ball during the next batter’s at bat.

The Bombers came up in the bottom of the ninth inning trying to win the game so they would not have another repeat extra inning game.  Shea Pierce singled to start off the inning.  Hammerman was the next batter and he singled as well with Pierce advancing to second.  The Bombers were not able to do anything else the rest of the inning.

Both teams were able to get two runners on base in the tenth inning but were not able to get them across home plate.

In the eleventh inning, the Cane Cutters got their third run on the board which was enough to get the win.  Marse was able to get on first by the way of a hit by pitch.  He then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Lee was able to get Marse over to third on a groundout to shortstop which was the second out.  Tyler Kamtz came up next and drew a walk.  During the next batter, Marse scored on a passed ball to give the lead to the Cane Cutters which would hold up in the bottom of the inning to give them the win.

Isaac Rodriguez led the Cane Cutters offensively.  He went 2-4 with a double, one RBI and two walks.  Marse went 2-4 with one run scored and Adam Seal went 2-5.  Mitchell Nau was able to get a hit in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games.  Seal is currently second in the TCL in batting average at .378.

Sam Malchar started the game for the Cane Cutters making his third appearance pitching six innings, giving up two runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out one in a no decision.  After Malchar was pulled, Ben Suit, Scott Shimp and Merrick Ardoin combined to pitch five shutout innings only giving up three hits, walking two and striking out four.  Shimp got his second win of the season and Ardoin recorded his second save of the season.

The Cane Cutters upped their record to 8-6 while the Bombers are 11-4 and now on their first losing streak of the season at two games.  The Cane Cutters are leaving Bryan, TX with a two-game sweep of the Bombers who were in first place but now are one game behind first place.  The Cane Cutters are now 2-1 at the halfway point of their six-game road trip and heading to Alexandria, LA to take on the Alexandria Aces in a one-game series.  They are 4-0 against the Aces this season and hope to continue their success.
