Cane Cutters Record Two Shutouts In Doubleheader

07/29/2017 9:25 PM -

With the regular season winding down, Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of first-place Brazos Valley moved the Cane Cutters within five games of the top spot in the TCL.

Due to the rainout on July 10th, the Cutters hosted the Brazos Valley Bombers for two seven inning games on Saturday. Fans were treated to the “Dog Days of Summer” promotion sponsored by Carson Vet Clinic, in which they could bring the canine members of their family to the park using $3 “Pooch passes.” All of the proceeds from these passes went directly to helping local veterinary clinics and animal shelters. The saying goes that dogs are man’s best friend, and they were Acadiana’s best friends as well, inspiring and celebrating the victories along with the rest of the Cane Cutters faithful.

Jonathan Ellison earned Player of the Game honors for the Game 1 after his complete game, shutout performance.

For four innings, the teams traded zeros as both Jonathan Ellison (Cochise College) and Brazos Valley’s Mike Mokma were sharp early, but in the fifth inning the Cane Cutters struck. After Jesus Tovar (Northern Illinois) singled to start the inning, Jonathan Artigues (Tulane) pinch-ran and came around to score the opening run on an RBI single by Gavin Bougeois (ULL). Kelsey Richard (Northwester State) would finish out the scoring with an RBI triple immediately after Bougeois’ single while Ellison allowed just two hits and two walks all afternoon.

Game 2 gave Keith Meier (Baton Rouge CC) a time to shine, as he took home Player of the Game honors in the nightcap after he threw six shutout innings of his own.

Acadiana got on the board much earlier in the nightcap, with a pair of runs in the first. Daniel Lahare (ULL) would record an RBI single to score Gabe Montenegro (Southern Miss) before scoring himself on a Brady Bell (Nichols St) RBI single later in the frame. After allowing a leadoff walk, Meier would retire ten Bombers in a row en route to a pitching line of 6 IP, 1 hit allowed, 3 walks and six strikeouts. The final of 3-0 would be reached on a Tovar RBI single in the bottom of the sixth that scored Bell.

Jonathan, Keith and the rest of the Cane Cutter will go for the 3-game sweep tomorrow, with first pitch being thrown at 7pm. Come for the baseball, stay for the in-between-inning entertainment tomorrow as there will be several local dance studios performing throughout the game!
