Cane Cutters Strike Out Cancer & Marshals

08/06/2017 10:20 PM -

On a day full of emotions and festivities, the Cane Cutters capped off the main event with a 7-4 victory over the Texas Marshals on Sunday night.

The party got started early, with a pre-game Home Run Derby for ages 8-and-under, 9-to-11 and 12-to-15. The winner of each age group came away with an autographed bat signed by Cane Cutter players. Once the game got underway, the focus moved from home runs to strikeouts, with every strikeout recorded by a Cane Cutter pitcher creating the opportunity to raise money to fight cancer with a pass-the-bucket promotion. The Cutters also wore specially designed jerseys, which are up for auction until August 7th on biddingowl.com. Acadiana was also able to provide plenty of on-field entertainment, starting in the bottom of the second when a Cain Castille (McNeese) 2-run single highlighted a three run frame. Prior to the second the Cutters spotted Texas a 2-0 lead, making the score 3-2 after two. Starter Hayden Marze (Mississippi St) took the “Strike Out” portion of “Strike Out Cancer Night” to heart and recorded eight punch out in his four innings of work. The Cutters would add three runs in the bottom of the fifth, including an RBI single by Nathan Gabryzwski (Lamar) that scored Gabe Montenegro (Southern Miss) extending the lead to 6-2. Texas would add a pair in the seventh to pull within two at 6-4, but a Trey Morgan (Southeastern Louisiana) sacrifice fly in the eighth added an insurance run that would prove to be the final tally of the contest.

Marze earned Player of the Game honors, finishing with a final stat line of 4 innings pitched while allowing four hits and two walks to go along with his eight strikeouts. Overall, Cane Cutters pitching recorded twelve strikeouts in the contest.

The Cane Cutters will play their final regular season game at home against Texas on Monday as they look to keep momentum heading into their playoff matchup at Victoria on Wednesday. Monday’s game will feature a “Back To School” theme, where admission will be free with a contribution of at least four school supplies to the school drive the Cutters will be hosting. All supplies will be donated to United Way who will then distribute them among the local schools.
