Cane Cutters Hammer Out a Win against League Leading Pump Jacks
The Cane Cutters faced off tonight against the East Texas Pump Jacks who have held first place in the Texas Collegiate League for the past several weeks. Will Mathis took the mound got the win as he pitched seven innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs, and striking out 9 batters while only walking 2. Newcomer Bradly Day came in a pitched a brief inning, and Kelby Langston, TCL leader in ERA, came in to close it out, with a final score of 8-5.
Schlottmann got the loss for the Pump Jacks allowing 7 hits and 6 runs, and only walking one and striking out one. Cane Cutter bats were hot as they racked up 14 hits. Barba went 3 for 5, Rodriguez 2 for 4, Woods 2 for 5, Nau 1 for 5, Roussel 2 for 3, Brown 1 for 3, Kamtz 1 for 3, and Lee 1 for 1. 
Rodriguez started out hot in the first inning with a double, but was left on base. In the second, Pump Jacks 2nd baseman Tyler Girouard (ULL) got a single, and was stranded there as well. In the 3rd, with one out Williams hit a single, followed by a double by Wall to score Williams and give the Pump Jacks the early 1-0 lead. The Cane Cutters tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a double from Mike Barba, scoring Tyler Kamtz, who was on base from his single. Ladd Rhodes then gave the Cane Cutters a 2-1 lead when he singled left to score Barba.
In the top of the 4th, the Cane Cutters managed a 3 up 3 down defensive inning. In the bottom of the 4th, a bases-loaded walk made the score 301 Cane Cutters, and with the bases still loaded, Barba singled to center field to increase the lead to 5-1.  
 
In the top of the fourth, the Cane Cutters managed a 3 up 3 down defensive inning. When they came back in, the Cutters went to work as Woods singled, Brown singled, Roussel singled, and Kamtz walked, scoring Woods. Schlottmann called it a day at that point, and Greening came in to relieve. After a strikeout of Thornell, Barba singled scoring Brown and Roussell. Kamtz scored in Rhodes at bat, as he was thrown out at first. At the end of the 4th, the score was 6-1.
The Pump Jacks responded in the top of the fifth, with deBord leading off with a double, followed by a single by O'Leary. Williams' at bat scored both of these guys on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
Then it began to rain, and the bats quieted down until the bottom of the 7th, when Mitch Nau singled to first, followed by Gabe Woods advancing to first on a single as well. Austin Roussel singled to first, scoring Nau, and Braxton Lee came in for Kamtz and singled, scoring Woods.
In the top of the 8th, Mathis walked Wall, and he retired from the game and newcomer Bradly Day came in in relief. Day retires two batters with fly outs, and then Kalkowski smashed a homer to left field to make the score 8-5 Cane Cutters. In the bottom of the 8th Barba and Rodriguez singled but were left on base. In the 9th Kelby Langston subs for Day, and Lovato gets on with an error. Braxton Lee robs DeBord with a diving catch, and ultimately Langston puts the Pump Jacks away with no hits or errors and ends the game, with a final score of 8-5 Cane Cutters.
The Cane Cutters are off tomorrow and head to McKinney Saturday and Sunday. On Monday they return to Fabacher for our rescheduled MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT against the Brazos Valley Bombers. All Military Personnel, past and present, and their spouse and children will be admitted to the park for $2 per person. Also as it is Coke Monday, all children 10 and under will be admitted to the park FREE with an empty Coke can. As part of our tribute, we will have fireworks after the game, sponsored by C&G Boats. So come on out and help us recognize the heroes among us, and watch some great baseball at Fabacher Field.
