Canes Drop One to East Texas Pump Jacks

07/28/2012 9:18 PM -

The Acadiana Cane Cutters once again met the East Texas Pump Jacks on Fabacher Field Saturday evening.  The Pump Jacks, after losing on Wednesday, came back with a vengeance, and while the Cane Cutters put up a valiant effort, they were unable to overcome the early lead East Texas put on the scoreboard early in the game.

Cane Cutter fans were treated with legendary LSU baseball player and Olympic bronze medalist Warren Morris, who threw out the first pitch.  Warren Morris is famous for hitting the walk-off home run for LSU to win the 1996 College World Series. That same year, he played on the USA Olympic Baseball team and they came in third! Fans were excited as Mr. Morris made himself available to sign autographs and baseballs for everyone in attendance.

The Pump Jacks came out swinging—literally.  The game started off with a series of hit batsmen and errors by the Cane Cutters that gave the Pump Jacks their first three runs in the first inning. The Cane Cutters answered back in the second inning with a run of their own when Adam Seal scored off of Almann Snowden’s double, leaving the score 3-1.

The Pump Jacks had another big inning in the thirds when they were able to score two runs off Cane Cutter pitcher Cody Tillotsons' three walks, leaving the score 5-1.

In the seventh inning a single was hit by Austin Roussel who then was able to advance two bases when Mike Barba hit a single. Barba stole second and on the catcher’s throw to second, Roussel scored on the throw to second, making the score 5-2 where it would remain the rest of the game.

The Cane Cutters were not without their own shining moments on the field.  In the fourth a line drive double play by Isaac Rodriguez allowed for two easy outs for the beginning of the inning, and in the ninth inning Brett Thornell turned a double play, taking the bag himself and throwing the runner out at first.

Come see the Cane Cutters take on the Brazos Valley Bombers Sunday night (tomorrow) at Fabacher Field starting at 7:00.  Kids can use the new corkscrew water slide from 6-7 for free sponsored by Duhon's Fun Jumps, so bring a towel and change of clothes.
