Cane Cutters in the Bigs - Joshua Burris

09/11/2012 11:58 AM -
One of the more versatile athletes to ever play in the Texas Collegiate League is making a name for himself in the minors.

Baton Rouge native and former Acadiana Cane Cutter alum Joshua Burris just wrapped up a fantastic rookie season with the Elizabethton Twins of the Appalachian League. The 5’11” right-hander was selected in the 17th round of the 2011 draft by the Minnesota Twins organization and has dazzled in his first season as a pro.

In 18 appearances as a reliever, Burris accounted for a league leading 7 wins and a phenomenal 1.75 ERA. The fireballing righty featured a lively fastball and excellent curve that held opposing hitters to a menial .190 average while striking out more than a batter per inning.

Those weren’t the only positive vibes coming from Elizabethton this year. The team advanced to the Appalachian League title series this season and knocked off the Burlington Royals by virtue of a game three walk-off grand slam.

With the Cane Cutters in 2011, Burris was featured as both a pitcher and fielder. From the mound, he recorded 14 punch-outs over 10 innings en route to adding 5 saves on his ledger. The multipurpose Burris was an offensive threat as well, batting a respectable .261 as a switch hitter and swiping 23 bags on the base paths.

This is a promising start for a former Cane Cutter as he clears his path to the Bigs.
