Hein, Freeman, and Prince Locked in for this Summer

03/04/2013 3:29 PM -

Head Coach Lonny Landry continues to architect the Cane Cutters’ Opening Day roster by inking three more on Monday.

The Acadiana Cane Cutters are one step closer to kicking off their third season of Texas Collegiate League Baseball this summer. On Monday morning, Head Coach Lonny Landry confirmed the signing of three additional players to the 2013 Opening Day roster.

Outfielder Jordie Hein, and Pitchers Colton Freeman and Freddy Prince will be playing their summer ball for Acadiana come May.

Sophomore Jordie Hein, a native of Scottsdale, Arizona, had an outstanding freshman campaign with California State University, Bakersfield last season. In 2012, the lefty set a school record for most walks in a season with 36 and led the team with five triples. In addition to those esteemed accolades, Hein finished second on the team in runs scored (31) and cashed in 8 RBIs.

Last summer Hein played ball for the Peninsula Oilers of the Alaska Baseball League, where he cranked out a .255 batting average and 4 RBIs. In addition to his already quality body of work, the Cane Cutters look forward to having Hein be a threat on the base paths, as he led the Oilers with 13 swiped bags in 2012.

Colton Freeman, a talented, young pitcher from the University of Alabama, will add some additional SEC flavor to the Cane Cutters after this, his freshman season. In 2012 at Spain Park High School, Freeman led his Jaguars to the 6A state semifinals by contributing as one of the state’s best pitchers and outfielders. The 6’1” southpaw went on to sign with the Crimson Tide as the number 16 ranked prospect in Alabama.

Jonesboro, Arkansas product Freddy Prince will suit up for the Cane Cutters following his junior season this spring. The 6’3” University of the Ozarks pitcher will bring size and experience to the Cutters’ cast of arms this summer. Prince was featured mainly as an outfielder for the Eagles in 2012, where he convincingly displayed his broad skillset as an all-around athlete. Prince led the team with a .505 slugging percentage and finished tied for the team lead with 9 two-baggers at season’s end. If that wasn’t enough, he went on to hit a robust .323 from the plate, tallying 17 RBIs, 15 runs, and 2 big flies. With limited work on the bump, Freddy has accumulated 20 punch outs in 32 innings, but shows fantastic potential. Coach Landry plans to use Prince exclusively as part of the pitching staff.
