Acadiana splits yet again with Brazos Valley, evens season 8-8

06/18/2024 11:45 AM -

The Acadiana Cane Cutters (8-8) faced the Brazos Valley Bombers (7-7) at Fabacher Field for the first time this year, splitting the series 13-10 and 8-10. In the three times the teams have gone head-to-head, no sweep has been managed by either side.

The Acadiana pitching staff allowed only nine hits through nine innings of work in game one. Winning pitcher Noah Melancon (2-0) gave up one hit, one walk, and one earned run through two innings. Caleb Menard (1.2 IP), Jose Nunez (2.0 IP) and Blayne Newman (2.1 IP) collected four of the night’s seven strikeouts through the first six innings of play.

The Cane Cutters broke the gate open with a four-run first inning in game one. Bennett Mittelsteadt and Tanner Sever singled back-to-back to score Ashton Quiller and Tanner Hornback respectively. Dylan Biddick and Mittelsteadt were pushed across on two bases-loaded walks by Bomber starter Cameron Edmonds.

Despite a lead-shifting response from Brazos Valley in the middle innings, the Cane Cutters rallied back to plate five runs in the sixth. Hornback touched home on another bases-loaded walk to begin the scoring effort. Blaise Blancher and Austin Mills combined to reclaim the lead 11-8 on subsequent two-RBI singles.

The Bombers threatened in the top of the ninth after three walks sent home Cameron Henson, but closer Carson Fair was able to shut down the threat and earn his first save.

Per the team’s usual mix of power and patience, Acadiana put up 10 hits and drew 11 walks on Saturday night. They lead the Texas Collegiate League in walks, with 127 on the year.

Game two saw another tight contest. Brazos Valley put themselves on the board first, managing five hits and plating six runs through 2.1 innings on starting pitcher Konnor Graham.

Mark Collins kickstarted the Cane Cutters’ response by mashing a two-RBI triple in the fourth. The rising UL freshman and Reid Snider teamed up to drive three more home in the next inning. Mills sent another runner across in the fifth with his third double of the summer and plated the go-ahead run himself after scoring on an error by the Bomber catcher.

Momentum peeled off for Acadiana in the later innings. Three fielding errors led to three runs for the Bombers, paving the way for Brazos Valley to put the game back in their hands. The Cane Cutters left two of these runs answered to drop Sunday night’s game 8-10, falling out of the win column with an even 8-8 season record.

Five total defensive errors resulted in four unearned runs by the Bombers, coupled with 13 walks issued by the Acadiana pitching committee. The Cutters could not seem to find the ball like they had the night before, having struck out 11 times at the plate compared to the Bombers’ four K’s.

Brazos Valley’s Daniel Dial (2-0) received the win and closer Alex Thrasher was credited with the save, both having given up no hits and managing seven punchouts through the final four innings. Acadiana’s Caleb Muffoletto (0-3) took the loss.

The Acadiana Cane Cutters will hit the road to face the Baton Rouge Rougarou (8-6) on June 18-19. They will return to Fabacher Field for back-to-back home series versus the Rougarou on June 20-21 and Victoria Generals (10-5) on June 22-23. All games versus Baton Rouge will begin at 7:00 p.m. CT. The series with the Generals will have both games begin at 12:00 p.m. CT. All games can be streamed live on TCL TV
