Cane Cutters grant no mercy, sweep Gumbeaux Gators at home07/20/2024 12:40 PM -
After a thrilling road sweep versus the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators, the Acadiana Cane Cutters headed to Fabacher Field to host their Louisiana rivals at their place. They swept the Gators on Thursday (6-5) and Friday night (6-4) to extend their winning streak to four games.
Trey Usey (New Orleans) got the jump for game one, going 3.2 innings to walk one and strike out four. Usey, along with Jake Guidry (Bossier Parish CC), Noah Melancon (Nicholls St), and Bryce Calloway (New Orleans), all combined to allow just eight total hits and collect 13 K’s. Calloway, who closed out the last two innings, took home his second win of the season.
Three free bases and two singles off of Gumbeaux Gator starter Rodiensley Igencia (WOSC) saw the Cutters get on board with two runs in the first inning. However, Lake Charles cut the deficit in half with an RBI-single from Landon Hunt (San Jacinto) in the third inning and took the lead in the fourth with a four-hit offensive surge.
Reid Snider (LA Tech) and Cristian Garcia (Western Kentucky) worked to drive in two more runs in the fifth and Tanner Hornback (UT-Tyler) tied the game 5-5 with an RBI-single in the seventh. Plunging into extras, Bryce Calloway held off the threat on the mound and plated the winning run in the tenth, driven in by Ashton Quiller (Arkansas St.).
Friday night’s game didn’t fall into extra innings, but was close all the same: the first three innings saw a standoff between Acadiana’s Tyler Velino (New Orleans) and Lake Charles’ Andrws Acosta (WOSC) until the Gators broke the ice in the fourth to score two runs. Hornback drove in Snider in the fifth to bring it within one.
Not eager to go down that easy, a big five-spot in the seventh inning saw the Cane Cutters bound into the lead. Hornback pushed Conner O’Neal (SLU) and Quiller home, followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from the powerful Privateer duo Alexander Saunier (New Orleans) and Calloway.
Acadiana’s Harper Jordan (Nicholls St) picked up his second pitching win, allowing just two hits and collecting two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Emil Estrella (Indiana St) got the save after holding down the ninth inning on the mound. Lake Charles’ CJ Sturiale (LA Tech) took home his third loss.
