Acadiana Strikes Back

07/02/2013 9:30 PM -

The Cane Cutters hosted the visiting Woodlands Strykers on Tuesday night at Fabacher Field for game one of the two-game home stand.

The Cane Cutters welcomed in the Woodlands Strykers for their first visit of the 2013 season on Tuesday night. Both teams were eager to get July started off on the right foot, but only the Canes were able to make it happen, handily dispatching the visitors 8-3 at Fabacher Field.

Both teams got off to slow starts at the plate, as Canes’ pitcher Jake Winston and the Strykers’ starter Chris Thompson breezed through 4 full scoreless innings. The Cane Cutters were finally able to break through on a Nick Dawson RBI double, scoring Kyle Cedotal after a leadoff bunt single to start the inning, giving Acadiana the lead at 1-0 in the bottom of the 5th. Though the Cane Cutters scratched across just 1 run in that inning, they would blow the doors open in the 6th. Mitchell Nau led off the inning with a solo homerun over the left field fence, making the score 2-0 home team. The squad would follow with a barrage of hits from Logan Taylor, Nathan Pugh, and Kyle Cedotal. Taylor would eventually score on an error by Strykers’ pitcher Chris Thompson, while Pugh and Cedotal would plate on a Jordie Hein 2-out 2 RBI double that made the score 5-0 Cane Cutters after six complete. Acadiana kept the hits coming in the 7th, scoring 2 more runs on Pugh’s third hit of the game. Jace Statum and Logan Taylor scored on the single, pushing the score to 7-0. The Strykers would get a run across in the 8th on a Brian Smith single, finally putting the Strykers on the board late. The Cane Cutters would answer with their final run in the bottom of the 8th after Mitchell Nau gathered his second RBI of the game on a base hit, scoring left fielder Jordie Hein. In a surprise move, catcher Nau came in to pitch the bottom of the 9th to seal an 8-2 final with 2 strikeouts.

Starting pitcher Jake Winston earned the win, going 5 stellar innings, giving up no runs on 5 hits, while striking out 3 batters. Kaleb Fontenot delivered 3 innings pitched giving up one run on 3 hits while gathering 3 strikeouts.

The Cutters will be back at Fabacher Field tomorrow night for the series finale with the Strykers at 7:00 PM.
