Cane Cutters Taylor and Sanchez Earn POTW Honors

07/08/2013 1:35 PM -

The Cane Cutters sweep the Warstic TCL Player of the Week awards for July 2 through 7.

Acadiana started off the second half of the season with a bang this week, winning all 6 of the games they played during the stretch, 4 of which were on the road in Victoria and the Woodlands. As you all may know from Mitchell Nau’s prior selection, one pitcher and one position player are honored every week as the Texas Collegiate League and Warstic Players of the Week. This week, those honors went to two Cane Cutters’ standouts: shortstop Logan Taylor and pitcher Victor Sanchez.

Texas A&M’s freshman shortstop Logan Taylor was totally unstoppable this week for Acadiana, hitting .522 through all 6 of the Cane Cutters’ games, while also leading the team in just about every other offensive category. Taylor had 12 hits, 3 home runs, knocked in 7 RBIs, scored 11 runs, and stole 7 bases. His .913 slugging percentage and .621 on-base percentage were simply off the charts, as opposing pitchers struggled mightily to keep him off the base paths. Taylor’s big week brought his season batting average up to .363 with 33 hits, 17 RBIs, 18 free passes, 21 runs scored, and 15 swiped bags, all team-highs to this point in the season.

New Mexico freshman pitcher Victor Sanchez pitched an outstanding game on July 5th in Victoria against the Generals, going the distance for a one-run complete game win. Through his 9 innings of work, Sanchez allowed just 4 base runners all night, 3 on hits and 1 on a walk. Victor also tallied 8 whiffs during his dominant performance over the Generals. The win was his second on the season, and his record now stands at 2-1 with a 3.17 ERA through 22.2 innings pitched.
