Cane Cutters Shutout Generals at Fabacher

07/23/2013 8:18 PM -

Tuesday night meant more baseball in Acadiana as the Cutters welcomed the Victoria Generals to town for game one of the series.

Texas Collegiate League Baseball returned to Fabacher Field Tuesday night for a clash between two of the league’s top three teams. The Cane Cutters, still vying to stay atop the second-half standings, hosted a Victoria Generals team that has struggled to be consistent of late.

The Cane Cutters got started early in the bottom of the 2nd inning when shortstop Logan Taylor doubled down the line. Taylor was soon followed up by designated hitter Connor Barron who singled to put runners on the corners.  First baseman Nathan Pugh when on to put the Cane Cutters up by one tally with an RBI single that scored Taylor.

Fast forward to the 5th when Nick Dawson led off with a double. LSU’s Chris Sciambra was up next, who laid down a picturesque bunt for an infield single.  This put runners on the corners for right fielder Kyle Cedotal.  Cedotal laid down a bunt of his own which scored Dawson to put the Cane Cutters up by two.  The score remained the same until the 8th inning when the Cutters added two more runs for insurance purposes.  Catcher Mitchell Nau drew a 2 out walk, which then brought up Texas A&M product Logan Taylor.  Logan Taylor hit a single to put two runners on.  Connor Barron then stepped up to the plate and hit a 2 RBI two-bagger that would make the game well out of reach for the visitors 4-0.

Pitcher Jake Winston is credited with the win.  He pitched 8 innings giving up no runs, on 5 hits, walked just one batter, and stuck out 7 Generals.  Freddie Prince checked into the ball game in the 9th inning, striking out two batters in his frame to secure the win.

The Cutters will host these same Generals tomorrow for the series finale at Fabacher Field. Don’t miss a very festive evening at the park on Wednesday, as Lafayette Coca-Cola will wish Acadiana a “Merry Christmas Eve in July”. Bundle up before your sleigh ride to the stadium and prepare for seasonal hits, like a between-innings game of white elephant between fans, live music from saxophonist Jeremy Benoit, and a visit from a vacationing Santa Claus himself! Wednesday also means FREE admission for all kids who bring an empty Coca-Cola can or bottle. Keep up with the team on Facebook, Acadiana Cane Cutters Baseball, or on Twitter, @CaneCuttersBB.
