Cane Cutters defeat Woodland Strykers 12-7 on Memorial day

The Cane Cutters start their season off 2-0 after a sweep of the Woodland Strykers in a 12-7 win on Memorial Day.

Although the Strykers were unable to score any runs in yesterday’s matchup, they gave the Cane Cutters a scare after jumping to a 4-1 lead through three innings of play.

The Cane Cutters found their groove in the fifth inning by adding four runs and tying the game at five.

A second catcher’s obstruction call on catcher Jake Blunt and Makenzy Larsen hitting Styker’s batter Noah McGown with bases loaded at the top of the sixth gave the Strykers a 7-5 lead.

Austin Flores said he tried to settle things down, and the Cane Cutters responded.

“Thats was a crazy inning, but you’ve gotta make sure you don’t get sped up” Cane Cutters head coach Austin Flores said. “Keep your pitcher in a rhythm but don’t let things get too wild and out of hand. Our guys just did a good job keeping all night”

The rest of the night would be all Cane Cutters as they tacked on two more runs in the eighth and shut out the Strykers at the top of the ninth.

Trenton Buchhorn from the University of Texas at Tyler led the Cane Cutters in hits with three on five at bat and RBI’s with three.

The Cane Cutters remain undefeated through two games of play. The team will travel to Victoria Texas tomorrow to take on the Victory Generals with a chance at a 3-0 start to the season. Flores said it’s great to get two wins at home before having to go on the road.

“Getting two wins at home is huge,” Flores said. “I think our guys will have plenty of chances to rest tonight. Starting off 2-0 is just great.”
