06/26/2012 12:38 PM -

The Cane Cutters were able to get back on track against the Woodland Strykers tonight.  They put up eleven runs on thirteen hits and won easily by the score of 11-5.

The Cane Cutters wasted no time in getting on the board against the Strykers.  Mike Barba led off the game with a home run putting the Cane Cutters 1-0.  The second batter of the game, Isaac Rodriguez, singled.  The next batter, Mitchell Nau, got on base by the way of an error by the third baseman and was able to advance to second.  Rodriguez came all the way home to score on that play.  Ladd Rhodes came up a couple of batters later and singled to score Nau and advanced Adam Seal to third who had gotten on base by the way of a walk.  Austin Roussel came up two batters later and singled bringing home Seal and Rhodes.  Roussel got caught stealing to end the top half of the inning with the Cane Cutters leading 5-0.

The Strykers were able to get one run back in the bottom of the inning when Carter Burgess singled bringing home Michael Aquino who had walked earlier in the inning to get on base.  This put the score 5-1 in favor of the Cane Cutters at the end of one.

The Strykers were able to grab two more runs in the bottom of the second inning cutting the lead to 5-3.  Ryan Farney got on first base by the way of an error on the shortstop which also brought home Tim Redden and Ricardo Sanchez who had gotten on base by the way of a single and a double, respectively.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Strykers put another run on the board to cut the lead to one run at 5-4.  Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Dan Perkins who had doubled earlier in the inning to get on base.

At the top of the fifth inning, the Cane Cutters added more runs to their lead that the Strykers would not be able to overcome.  Rhodes and Alex Marse singled and Roussel drew a walk to load the bases with two outs.  Braxton Lee came up next and singled to drive in Rhodes and Marse extending the lead to 7-4.

The Cane Cutters added another run to their lead in the top of the sixth inning making the score 8-4.  Rodriguez and Nau walked to start off the inning.  Seal advanced each runner one base with a sacrifice to third.  Andrew Brown came up next and singled to score Rodriguez.

Roussel started off the top of the seventh inning with a triple.  Lee came up next and hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Roussel.  Barba was the next batter and got on base by the way of a single.  Barba stole second base and then scored on a Nau double.  Nau scored later in the inning by the way of an error by the third baseman.  At the end of the top half of the inning, the Cane Cutters had extended the lead 11-4.

The Strykers came to bat in the ninth with a huge deficit and a lot of work to do to make a comeback.  They were able to score one run in the inning by the way of a leadoff triple by Aquino and then an error by the shortstop that scored Aquino.  That was all that they could come up with and went down in defeat.

The Cane Cutters had many players that contributed to their offensive effort.  Roussel went 2-4 with a triple, one run, two RBIs and one walk.  Rhodes went 2-5 with two runs, one RBI and one walk.  Nau also went 2-5 with a double, two runs scored, two RBIs and one walk.  Barba went 2-6 with a homerun, two runs scored and one RBI.  Lee went 1-3 with three RBIs.  Barba, Nau and Rhodes each had a stolen base.  Barba’s homerun in the game was his first of the season.

Sam Malchar started the game for the Cane Cutters making his fourth start of the season.  He pitched three innings allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits, two walks and two strikeouts in a no decision.  Ben Suit came in relief of Malchar and earned the win in his fifth appearance of the season.  He pitched three and two-thirds innings allowing three hits, walking one and striking out four.  The win put his record at 2-1 on the season.

The Cane Cutters now have a record of 11-9 that is good enough for fourth place in the TCL.  The Strykers dropped to 6-15.  The Cane Cutters are now 2-0 against the Strykers for the season.  They will now travel to Bryan, TX to take on the Brazos Valley Bombers for a one-game series.  The Bombers are 14-7 and in second place in the TCL.  They just came off of a loss to the Victoria Generals.  The Cane Cutters will continue to play on the road until Sunday, July 1 where they will return to Fabacher Field to take on the Woodlands Stykers which will also be Slippery Sunday.  We hope to see you at the game.
