06/30/2012 10:19 AM -

The Cane Cutters were not able to overcome a three-run deficit late in the game at Riverside Stadium in Victoria, TX.  The Victoria Generals scored just enough runs to get the victory.

The Cane Cutters started off the scoring in the top of the third inning.  Braxton Lee singled to get on base.  Then, he advanced to second base on a wild pitch.  Isaac Rodriguez was able to single scoring Lee making the score 1-0 in favor of the Cane Cutters.

The next couple of innings went by without either team putting any runs on the board.  The sixth inning came around and the Cane Cutters scored again.  Mitchell Nau and Adam Seal both got on base to start off the inning.  They advanced a base on a wild pitch putting them on second and third.  Andrew Brown drove in Nau on a groundout to shortstop putting the Cane Cutters up 2-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Generals got on the board for the first time in the game.  Blue Hybner singled to start off their half of the inning and then Billy Richard came up to bat and hit a two-run homerun that tied the game.

During the next inning, the Generals took the lead for good in the game.  The first three batters got on base by the way of two errors by the third baseman and a hit by pitch which loaded the bases.  Trace Knoblauch pinch hit for Hybner and singled to score Patrick Duncan.  Brandon Tierney scored two batters later on a passed ball.  The third run of the inning was scored when Chad Kruse singled with the bases loaded to score Alex Konowski which put the Generals up 5-2.

The top of the eighth inning came around for the Cane Cutters, and it was time for them to attempt to put some more runs on the board.  Seal got on base by the way of a walk.  Ladd Rhodes came up next and singled to advance Seal to second and then advanced to third on an error by the second baseman.  Brown came up next and hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Seal for his second RBI of the game.  Gabe Woods was up next and singled advancing Rhodes to third base.  Alex Marse followed Woods with a single of his own driving in Rhodes which cut the lead to 5-4.

It came down to the last inning for the Cane Cutters to tie the game or go ahead being down by one run.  They got off to a good start when Mike Barba doubled to lead off the inning.  Rodriguez was able to sacrifice him over to third base with only one out.  The Cane Cutters fell just short with the next two batters getting out ending the game.

The main offensive contributors for the Cane Cutters were Barba, Rodriguez and Marse.  Barba went 2-5 with a double.  Rodriguez went 2-4 with one RBI.  Marse went 2-4.  Brown also helped out the Cane Cutters going 1-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Sean Kennel started the game for the Cane Cutters making his fifth appearance.  He pitched six innings giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out four.  Kelby Langston and Ryan Bergeron each pitched an inning in relief and combined to give up two runs (zero earned) on two hits, one walk and one strikeout.

The Cane Cutters fell to 12-11 on the season remaining in fourth place.  The Generals record went to 15-8 with third win in a row helping them remain in second place.  The Cane Cutters are now 2-2 on their six-game road trip and are headed to Spring, TX to take on the Woodlands Strykers for a three game series.  The first two will be Friday and Saturday at Strykers Stadium and the third will be back at home at Fabacher Field on Sunday which will also be Slippery Sunday, leading off a week for all those in Lafayette left behind from the beach.  Follow us on Facebook and at canecuttersbaseball.com to keep up with special themes for our four games this week.
