Three Starters to Return to Acadiana in 2013

02/18/2013 4:04 PM -

Brett Thornell, Gabe Woods, and Mitchell Nau are all set to suit up for the Cane Cutters again this summer.

The Acadiana Cane Cutters are looking forward to their third season of Texas Collegiate League Baseball and have their eyes set on capturing the franchise’s first league championship. Head Coach Lonny Landry took the inaugural steps towards achieving that goal on Monday, announcing the return of three very productive starters.

Catcher Mitchell Nau, infielder Brett Thornell, and second baseman Gabe Woods will all return to Fabacher Field this coming summer.  General Manager Jacob Andrews recognized the importance of having these players back in the fold for 2013, “It’s imperative to have some quality guys who have been here and done it. Their commitment to this team and to this area is important, and so is their leadership and production. We are ecstatic to be building around this core group of guys.”

Houston, Texas native Mitchell Nau, currently a sophomore at Texas A&M University, appeared in 28 games for the maroon and white as a freshman. This spring, Nau is already seeing significant playing time for Coach Rob Childress’ Aggies, starting in two of their first three games to open the season. Last summer, Nau didn’t cease to impress. The backstop posted a brilliant .284 mark at the dish, accounting for 27 RBIs, and 2 home runs, en route to being tagged for two prestigious league honors. Nau was named a midseason All-Star and later selected as the best at his position, being honored with a spot on the 2012 All-TCL Team roster.

Joining Nau on his return to Southwest Louisiana will be fellow Houstonian Brett Thornell. Thornell, who is looking forward to his third summer in Lafayette, recently transferred to Stephen F. Austin University following a standout sophomore campaign patrolling the infield for McLennan Community College. Over his Cane Cutters’ career, Thornell has tallied 30 RBIs, 20 runs scored, and one TCL All-Star Game appearance.

To help solidify the infield, second baseman Gabe Woods will be back in Acadiana this summer. The junior from Albany is currently an everyday starter for the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana. Originally a commit to the Ole Miss Rebels, Woods was named to the SEC All-Academic team before transferring to Meridian Community College. During his stay with the Cane Cutters last summer, Woods delivered in big ways, hitting a robust .288, where he notched 15 RBIs, and drew 14 free passes.

The Cane Cutters will open the 2013 Texas Collegiate League season on Thursday, May 30, when the Brazos Valley Bombers roll into Acadiana for a 7:00 PM first pitch. Opening Night is sponsored by your locally owned and operated Sonic Drive-In locations in Acadiana. Fabacher Field is Louisiana’s only destination to catch this season’s best in college baseball.
