Your Acadiana Cane Cutters topped off opening night with a thrilling 3-2 win over the Victoria Generals. The atmosphere was electric as Lafayette residents got their first taste of Texas Collegiate League baseball this season.

On the mound for the Cane Cutters was Kirk McCarty. McCarty pitched seven innings allowing only two hits and striking out six. McCarty, now 1-0, pitched strongly all night as the Generals struggled to get anything going during the first seven innings.

“It’s great to see him pitching as well as he did on opening night,” said Head Coach Lonny Landry, “With even more time to practice before his next start it will be exciting to see what he can do next.”

The Cane Cutters broke through in the bottom of the third inning, as they took an early 1-0 lead. Daniel Keating was instrumental to scoring the first run of the game, as he had a stolen base that moved him into scoring position.

Another player that stepped up big on opening night, was Taylor Braley. Braley was 3-4 on the evening while scoring a late run in the bottom of the 8th inning to put the team up 2-0.

Another much needed run was scored soon after by Adam Yacek. Yacek was 2-4 with a run scored and a RBI.

“That was some much needed offense at the right time,” Co-Owner Richard Chalmers said.

Due to the late runs added by Braley and Yacek, the Cane Cutters had built up a 3-0 lead for pitcher Scott Szush to protect.

Just as it looked like the Generals were back in the game, scoring two runs in the top of the 9th, Szush closed the door. Szush finished the game by striking out Adam Goss amd picking up the win.

The fans showed their appreciation after watching a hard-fought victory from their Cane Cutters. Lasting just 2 hours and 7 minutes the fans still saw an entertaining matchup between the two teams.

“Without the support in the crowd, tonight wouldn’t have been possible,” said General Manager Richard Haifley, “our guys loved the support and we hope to build on that by providing an exciting product our fans continue to want to see.”

The Cane Cutters finish up their series against the Victoria Generals Friday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm. It will be the first C&G Boats Firework Friday of the season, with the show starting after the game.
